Here’s the simple process of setting up the plugin.
Step 1: Install the plugin
The first step is to install the WordPress plugin in your WordPress account. There are two ways to do this.
One way is to go to the official WordPress plugin directory and download the Marketing Automation by Gist plugin. Then, upload it on the plugin page on your WordPress admin dashboard.
Or you can skip downloading the plugin by searching for "Marketing Automation by Gist" from within your WordPress admin account. Click the "Install Now" button on this page, as shown in the below screenshot.
Step 2: Copy your Gist project ID
Once you install the WordPress plugin, sign into your Gist account, go to the Projects tab at the bottom of the navigation menu. Click the ‘WordPress’ button, and copy your project ID and paste it into the Gist WordPress plugin settings.
This will allow the plugin to access Gist securely.
You can also access your Project ID in the URL itself. If you look at the alphanumeric code after 'https://app.getgist.com/projects/', that is your Project ID.
Step 3: Paste your project ID in your WP plugin
Then back inside your WordPress admin dashboard, go to Settings > Gist.
Once you're here, paste or type in the project ID that you secured from your Project page.
Once you enter your project ID here, you will need to check the boxes as required.
If you want to track all pages on your site, then check the ‘Enable Tracker’ box.
If you want to disable chat for WordPress admin users, then check the second box.
If you are already using a WordPress plugin such as MemberPress for your members/users, and if you want Gist to automatically identify your users without using the convertfox.identify method , then check the final box.
Then click 'Save Changes'
Step 4: Check the installation in Gist
Once you complete this step, you need to come back to your Projects page in Gist, and check if the installation is complete.
Click on the green button that says 'Check Now', and Gist will automatically verify that the WordPress plugin is installed correctly. Once you get the confirmation, you're good to go!

Sometimes, the installation may get delayed for a while, or you may not see the confirmation after clicking the 'Check Now' button. In that case, check if you're using a cache plugin on your WordPress (such as W3 Total Cache) and purge the cache before you check again.
Always make sure to check your website in an incognito window (private window) without any extensions to see if you are able to see the Gist chat messenger on your website. If you do not see the messenger button on your website but the installation process is completed successfully, then go to your the Messenger Configure Settings in your Gist account (Settings > Messenger > Configure) and check if the messenger is enabled or not.
How to check if the installation process is completed successfully?
If you followed the steps mentioned above, but still do not see the Gist messenger on your site, it could be that the installation is not complete.
You can check whether or not Gist has installed successfully on your website, by checking your browser console for errors related to Gist. Here's a simple check that you need to do.
Open your website in a new incognito window, right-click anywhere on the page, and choose 'Inspect Element' (or Inspect), and you'll see your browser's developer tools pop up.
Click on 'Console', type Gist, and hit enter.
If Gist is successfully installed, you will see the following.
If Gist is not installed successfully, you will see an error in the console.
If you see this error, then the installation is not successful. Remove the Gist plugin from your WordPress and try installing once again by following the steps laid out above.
