Import your contacts and their data into your workspace

If you are currently using Gist on your website, you can import your users from your previous email service provider or CRM, by simply uploading a CSV file.

The CSV upload method allows you to import name, email, user ID and signup date in the format DD/MM/YYYY, ISO 8601, or a Unix time stamp. Please note that if you use DD/MM/YYYY you can't send us the time.

Also, CSV imports allow you to create custom user attributes (include a column for each).

For example, Mixpanel includes last_seen, and MailChimp imports the user's IP.

Once you export the CSV file from your previous provider, you can import the data to Gist.

Step 1: Log into your Gist account and click the ‘Contacts’ tab on the taskbar.

Step 2: Click on the ‘Import’ button and choose your CSV file

You can also download our sample CSV file and see how the format is like, so you can avoid any potential errors while importing.

Your CSV file will then be uploaded to Gist and your contacts will be imported automatically.

Step 3: Tag your CSV file with an appropriate name such as ‘March Free Trial Users’, based on the type of contacts you just uploaded.

Once your file is imported, you can search for your newly added list of users on the Contacts page.

For instance, in this case, you can search for the tag: March Free Trial Users, and all the contacts that you just added will be shown.

You can now perform actions on these new contacts, such as sending them an email campaign, creating a new user segment, triggering a targeted auto message, etc.


1. If you have chosen the date format on the *Mapping*, make sure you've chosen the MM/DD/YYYY format for the date. 

Also, if the date format is chosen then all the rows in the CSV must have dates with the same format. If any of the columns has the date added in a different format, it will throw an error in the CSV with the row and column number.

2. Limit the # of Columns when importing. 7 is a good limit.

If you need to import data with a lot of columns, for example 21 columns, we suggest you split the CSV data into 7 columns and import 3 times. 

And if you have any column that is unwanted, it's better to remove that column before importing. 

Note: It is mandatory to have the email field while importing, each time. 

3. Do not add special character to the CSV headers.

For example: Email instead of E-mail.

4. Limit # of rows to 10,000 per import.

If you need to import more than 10,000 rows of data, upload multiple CSV files, with a limit of 10,000 rows per CSV.
